While I was working as a classroom teacher, I had a few simple rules for my students. There were the obligatory ones, such as being polite to others and allowing everyone to have a chance to speak, and then there was the rule I made to help my students become more successful and well-liked into adulthood: No complaining!

As a new teacher, I was shocked at how much complaining went on in the classroom, and this included placing blame on others and making excuses. It got to the point that when someone began to whine about almost anything, I would interrupt them to ask if they were complaining or it what they wanted to share would be of value to other students as well. Nine times out of ten, they would stop talking and apologize for the complaint they were about to deliver.

When I was first online, I met a woman at a live event who was a professional complainer. She would start a sentence with “It’s so unfair” or something similar and then launch into a speech about a recent event that kept her from succeeding. I was fascinated and became a voyeur in her presence. It turned out that nothing in her life was her fault and that others were out to keep her from succeeding in various ways. I asked for specifics and pulled up a chair to hear her out.
