Ask someone what they dream about, and you have a window to their soul. If you can help them attain their dreams, they will follow you to the end of the earth. You will give them what they want and achieve what you need at the same time. Learning how to motivate others is an ongoing goal of mine as an entrepreneur.

You need to listen to what they want to accomplish. This requires asking many questions that will get to the bottom of what they want. Get them to talk about their dreams and imagine what their lives would be like if they were able to make them happen. What would life be like for their families? Would they buy a bigger home? Maybe they have always wanted a vacation home. Let them imagine every possibility.

Motivate Others: Corporate Strategy versus Entrepreneurial Thinking

This concept is foreign to most companies. They simply hire people to do a job and only concentrate on what’s good for the company. If they took more time to find out what employees want, they might find employees who are much more in tune with the needs of the company. The more a company can help employees realize their dreams, the higher the chance those employees will become company advocates. This is precisely why your work as an entrepreneur is so important in today’s world. Your challenge is to motivate others around you to dream and live the life they want and deserve.

You need to be genuine when considering the dreams of others. If you are doing it simply to try and get people to do some task, they will see through this, and it won’t be effective. In fact, it will be seen as manipulative and they will resent you for it. People have feelings, and their dreams are important to them. It’s important not to marginalize those dreams or people.

You’ll get more out of them if you are genuine. They will appreciate you for that and will listen to what you want from them. Of course, you will need to find common ground between what they want and what you want from them. That’s not always easy. But, it is worthwhile.

The whole process is about compromise for everyone involved. You may not be able to provide everything that people want but with certain concessions, you may be able to give them something that makes them and you happy.

Not everyone will share your vision, and their dreams will be too far away to find common ground. There is nothing wrong with this. It’s just the way it is. They will probably move on in search of their dreams, and you can look for others that you have common goals with. Motivate others and the world will be your oyster.
